LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - University of Kentucky basketball fans woke up to a Yahoo! Sports report tying two former and one current Wildcat with documents related to the ongoing FBI investigation into a pay-for-play scandal.
When fans woke up Friday to the news, it made them think about the scandal involving the University of Louisville, which is another university involved in an FBI investigation.
"Especially after the Louisville situation it's not good, but we will just hope for the best until the final ruling is made," UK student Alex Mayes said.
It was a popular topic of conversation as students walked to-and-from class. Many are theorizing about the many "what-ifs" still surrounding the situation. Big Blue Nation is well-known for their faith in the Wildcats, but some were not surprised Kentucky is now tied to an NCAA scandal.
"Being the best program in college basketball you figure something might be going on, but hopefully it is nothing that will hurt the program," UK student Lucas Meiners said.
Meiners enjoyed seeing arch-rival Louisville receive NCAA sanctions, but the recent report has him more cautious about the future of Kentucky basketball.
"As a UK fan I was happy to see Louisville go down, but now that Kentucky might be in the discussion it's concerning," Meiners said, "It kind of brings about that discussion if athletes should be paid to play in college."
With Kentucky playing a Missouri team fighting for its NCAA Tournament lives, fans are hoping the Yahoo! report does not alter the team's focus Saturday.
