Family escapes burning home in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Several crews worked to battle a structure fire in Lexington.

Crews were first dispatched at 7:18 Tuesday morning to Sarasota Court, off Eastland Parkway.

Officials say a family smelled smoke and was able to make it out of the home safely. According to firefighters, the home had working smoke detectors, but the fire was able to burn undetected because it was contained to the attic.

"If a fire is allowed to go unchecked in an attic, it will absolutely collapse," said Lexington Fire Major Maria Roberts. "It'll collapse the room, burn through the room, any of those things."

There is some damage to the kitchen area, but overall, officials say there wasn't a lot of smoke inside the house.
