FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Hundreds of people attended a school choice rally in Frankfort Thursday morning.

National School Choice Week is held each January. Organizers want to put a positive spotlight on effective education options.

Two Kentucky lawmakers, Rep. John "Bam" Carney and Sen. Ralph Alvarado, spoke to the crowd at Thursday's event.

Carney is a longtime public school teacher and administrator.

"Some ask why do you support school choice and it's because I support families and children," Carney told the crowd. "Families and children should be the ones making that decision."

Carney has filed a bill to create a tax credit scholarship program that he says will allow students of different backgrounds and needs to make a choice as to what type of education best fits them.

Alvarado has filed a companion bill in the senate.
