OWENTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The Kentucky State Police is investigating the death of an Owen County child involved in an ATV accident.
On Sunday evening, Kentucky State Police received a call of a single vehicle accident at the intersection of Greenup Road and Georgetown Road in Owen County.
A side-by-side off-road vehicle, operated by 27-year-old Spencer Lawson, overturned in the roadway. 24-year-old Cheyanne Fredrick was a passenger in the vehicle along with a two-year-old boy.
Neighbors who live near the scene of the accident said the roads were slick and the ATV was not moving fast before it overturned.
"The slant that comes off of 845 onto this road is pretty significant. So when they went around there and the wet roads being a part of that, there was really no hope. They were being really safe about it though," Breeanna Renfro said.
Renfro said several people immediately tried to help.
"A lot of the neighbors who ran over to help- they were all, you know, crying- trying to keep everybody from seeing everything," Renfro said.
Police say Fredrick and the child were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital of Owenton, where the child was pronounced dead by the Owen County Coroner. Police say Fredrick suffered serious injuries.
The accident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police. An autopsy for the child has been scheduled for Monday afternoon and a toxicology report is pending for the driver.
