Sheriff: Deputy injured, three dead after shooting

ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Rowan County sheriff says three people are dead after a shooting Sunday near Morehead.

The sheriff says two women and the suspected shooter are among the dead.

Rowan Co. Coroner John Northcutt identified the victims as Garry Morrison, 51, Anna Morrison, 71, and Latoya Cooper, 32. The coroner says Anna Morrison was Garry's mother and that Garry and Cooper were in a relationship.

Troopers tell WKYT that they were initially called to a home on Island Fork Road for a disturbance between a man and a woman. They say the man shot at deputies.

"They said somebody was barricaded in the house or something and that's about all I know about it and then I hear in Morehead one of the officers got shot," Lawrence Wright, who lives near the scene, told WKYT.

Troopers say a deputy was shot in the hand. He is expected to be okay.

The sheriff tells WKYT that the man killed the two women before killing himself.

Firefighters from the nearby Route 377 station were also called to a home near the scene for a fire. The sheriff says the man set the home on fire before killing himself.

"We didn't know if the subject doing the shooting was still alive and we didn't think he had exited the home," Rowan County Sheriff Matt Sparks told WKYT.

The sheriff says the suspected shooter had call 911 saying he'd shot his girlfriend.

"It's tragic. It goes back to, you know, some officers were talking at the scene this person is known to have some mental health issues and it just seems like there's so much of that going on in our country right now and our county," Sheriff Sparks said.
