LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Kentucky State Police trooper is injured following a crash on I-75 in Laurel County.

Trooper Houston Lewis

Officials confirm the trooper's vehicle was the only vehicle involved in the crash in the northbound lanes near the 41-mile marker.

Police identified the trooper as Houston "Ethan" Lewis who serves Post 13 in Hazard.

Police say the trooper was on his way to Frankfort for training when he lost control for unknown reasons.

His cruiser went down a 150-foot embankment. Lewis was able to call 911 around 9:06 a.m. to report he was involved in a crash and trapped in the wreckage.

An officer who found the trooper says he told him he crashed two hours prior.

The London/Laurel County Rescue Squad removed the trooper from the vehicle. An air ambulance flew the trooper to UK Chandler Medical Center for treatment.

Trooper Lewis got his start in law enforcement with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office as a court security officer. His former colleagues describe him as simply a "great guy."

"He was tough when he was here ... tough and fair ... he is going to pull through I know," said Laurel County Sheriff's Office PIO Gilbert Acciardo. "He has all the prayers of the Laurel County Sheriff's Office."

According to his wife, Trooper Lewis is now stable at the hospital.
