Lexington's first Walmart store closing in August

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington's first Walmart store is closing next month.

A Walmart spokesperson has confirmed to WKYT the Richmond Road location will close Aug. 10, citing the changing landscape of retail.

The news was first reported by our news partners at the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The Herald-Leader also reports Walmart will also close three locations in Louisville as a result of this announcement.

The 200 employees at the location were made aware of the closure Wednesday morning. The hope is employees will be able to transfer to other locations, but it is unknown how many will be retained.

Some customers say they enjoyed the Richmond Road location, but they do not feel the closing will dramatically impact their shopping habits.

"It was a good Walmart. It was a part of my childhood. It’s something I’m going to miss personally, but it’s 2018. I think it’s time for something new," shopper Chris Jones said.

The Richmond Road location does not have a full grocery offering, and it is larger than the company's Neighborhood Market stores.

Merchandise at the store will be marked down.

The store opened in 1993.

Employees tell WKYT that the store will now be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
