LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Amy McGrath says she hopes to challenge Representative Andy Barr for Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District.
McGrath released a video on Tuesday announcing her intention to seek the Democratic Party nomination in the May 2018 primary. She said she decided to run after her retirement from the Marine Corps in June. In the video McGrath said, "This is my new mission – to take on a Congress full of career politicians who treat the people of Kentucky like they’re disposable."
Lt. Col. McGrath will first have to win the Democratic primary. Her major opponent will be Reggie Thomas. Thomas is the state senator for District 13 which covers Fayette County. Thomas announced his candidacy back in July. Geoff Young is also running for the nomination.
Rick VanMeter, who is Representative Andy Barr's Chief of Staff, released a statement saying, "Congressman Barr is not focused on the Democrats' intra-party fight, especially a year before the 2018 primary election. Instead, he is focused on fighting for the values and interests of the people of the Sixth District in Congress, keeping his promises and doing the job he was elected to do. There will be a time in the future for politics, but now is the time to do the work of the American people."
Kentucky's primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 22, 2018.
