Padgett was an assistant coach under Pitino. He also played at the University of Louisville.
"It's been a dark week at the University of Louisville," Padgett said. But he also said he is looking forward to moving ahead with his team.
"Me doing this is for them. I want to do this for these players," he added. "These kids deserve it. "
Padgett is handling the day to day operations of the team. He says he will focus on finding a staff once the university puts an interim athletics director in place.
