LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - The University of Louisville interim president held a news conference on Wednesday afternoon announcing that athletic director Tom Jurich and head basketball coach Rick Pitino are on administrative leave.
Greg Postel met with both athletic director Tom Jurich and head basketball coach Rick Pitino on Wednesday morning. Neither spoke to the media about what was discussed during those meetings.
On Wednesday afternoon, Postel said Pitino was placed on unpaid administrative leave and Jurich on paid leave. The Board of Trustees voted unanimously in support of the decision.
Postel also said one student-athlete is being notified he will not be included in basketball activities.
During the news conference, Postel said they made it very clear that "we aren't going to tolerate what has gone on at Louisville," and that it should be obvious that "he's cleaning house."
"We hope to have an interim head coach named within 48 hours."
On Tuesday, Postel said authorities notified him that the university was part of a federal investigation involving criminal activity related to men's basketball recruiting. Court documents said that financial advisers, basketball coaches, and an official with an athletic apparel company helped funnel money to the families of high school athletes to get them to commit to certain universities. The lawsuit did not name the school, but it did say the investigation surrounded a Kentucky research university that was already on probation with the NCAA.
The Board of Trustees will decide on whether to fire Jurich, while the Athletics Association Board will vote on Pitino's future.
"Unbelievable uncertainty and tumult going into the season for basketball," said Yahoo Sports analyst Pat Forde. "I mean, this is a very good team. It's going to start practice this week and they don't know who the coach is. They don't know who the athletic director's going to be. We have an interim president here. You could not be any more unsettled then the University of Louisville is right now so they have to act quickly and smartly to try just circle the wagons and have a basketball season."
One recruit, Anfernee Simons, announced on Twitter that he is pulling his commitment from the University of Louisville. Evan Daniel with scout.com says another recruit, Courtney Ramos, also decommited from Louisville.
