LEE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A medical helicopter transported one person to the hospital following a fire in Lee County on Monday morning.
Dispatchers got a report of a fire at a home on Newton Road, which is off Spencer Ridge Road in Lee County around 10 Monday morning. The fire had fully engulfed the house by the time firefighters arrived.
61-year-old Herman Newton lives in the home with his family. Newtown, two of his daughters, and other family members were inside when the fire started. Relatives say everyone made it out safely, but Newton went back inside to try and save a small dog. That's when he suffered second-degree burns to his arms and head.
Newton's family says he's been a pastor in Beattyville for more than 30 years.
"What we do know is we've lost everything we own and anybody that can help or pray for us, we appreciate it," said Ada Newton, Herman's wife.
"We're going to restart. We're going to rebuild. We're going to do just fine," his daughter Ashley remarked. "Like I said we've got each other and love of the community."
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire. The family believes an oil heater may be to blame.
