LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Hundreds of people in need enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner at Broadway Christian Church in Lexington Wednesday night.
It's part of an annual event put on by the Lexington Rescue Mission to serve the community.
"We really want to reach out to people who are really hurting this time of year ... who might be all alone ... and provide for them the basic physical need for food," said Lexington Rescue Mission Development Director Laura Carr. "But, it's also a great opportunity to connect with folks and let them know about the other services we offer: housing, employment help, all those kinds of things so we can help them get back on their feet."
Volunteers served guests their meal complete with Thanksgiving essentials and dessert. Lexington Rescue Mission Supervisor Becky Connell helped prepare the meal as she has for years.
"We've been doing this dinner since 2001, so we've had several years of practice," Connell said. "The volunteers are just fantastic. We couldn't do it without them."
Organizers say the goal is to provide a family atmosphere where people can relax and enjoy.
"We just want to be the hands and feet of Jesus to these people," Connell said.
