MOREHEAD, Ky. (WKYT) - A man suspected of burglarizing three stores in Morehead is now in jail.
Morehead Police said Bryan Smith and at least one more person broke into Bypass Pawn late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Surveillance cameras captured the crime.
Travis Holbrook works at Bypass Pawn and says it's the first time anyone has burglarized the shop in six years.
Holbrook said, "It's just one of those things that shocks you, and you think, what possess anybody to want to do that and even think they can get away with it?"
After failing to grab any jewelry, the thief used a machete to smash a gun case, making off with eight handguns. While police arrested Smith, they recovered six of the eight guns on Friday night.
Holbrook says he is less worried about the financial loss to the business and more concerned about the safety issues of having that many guns potentially wind up in the wrong hands.
"Anybody who is going to obtain them probably can't obtain them legally. So most of the time, they're not going to have good intentions with the guns they're purchasing."
Smith is also suspected of stealing televisions from Walmart and breaking into Save-A-Lot.
To date, Smith is the only suspect charged. Police say they are looking for a man named Timothy Lewis Jr., because he was the one who allegedly had the stolen guns, but was not home when police found them.
Anyone who knows Lewis' whereabouts is asked to contact Morehead Police.
