A Jessamine County couple escaped an early morning house fire on Sunday, but the resulting damage is now making it hard to return in time for Christmas.
The fire started inside a home off Pinoak Drive, which is just off Edgewood Drive near Main Street in Nicholasville.
Firefighters say it was just around 3 a.m. this Christmas Eve morning when they got the call.
Officials explain that the fire started on the lower floor of the house, and spread into the attic, causing significant fire and smoke damage.
The homeowners, described as an older couple with no children, were able to make it out safe. It's unclear whether or not smoke detectors woke them up.
Firefighters also say the residents' dog was missing all day, and it's possible a pet cat was also unaccounted for after they cleared the scene.
Crews are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
WKYT is trying to get in contact with the displaced residents for an update on the status of their missing dog. As soon as we get more information, we will update this story.
