WAYNE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Officials with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife are investigating a deadly boating accident on Lake Cumberland.
It happened early Sunday morning near Ramsey Point, in northern Wayne County.
We are told a father and son were out fishing early in the morning as part of a tournament benefiting the child of a Somerset police officer.
However, around 4 a.m., organizers called police when the two did not come back to shore.
Officials found their boat capsized near an embankment. The coroner pronounced Donnie Flynn, 70, dead at the scene. His son, Derek, who is a sergeant with Somerset Police, was taken to the hospital.
Sgt. Chris King with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife said they believe fog played a factor in the crash.
"Every fisherman that we spoke to ... commented on how foggy it was and that they were nervous about the fog," King said.
Officials told WKYT the two men were wearing life jackets at the time. They called this a "horrible" accident.
"To know they were out doing something to benefit someone, it's a horrible thing," King said.
Derek Flynn was taken to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and then to UK Hospital. Officials said he is expected to recover.
