One injured in Estill Co. shooting; suspect in custody

ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Troopers from Kentucky State Police are investigating a shooting in Estill County.

Police say the shooting happened Saturday morning around 9 a.m. outside an unmarked mechanic business off Elmer Richardson Road.

Officials say the victim was pulling into work when witnesses saw a man known to live nearby pulled a firearm on him.

A truck with a shattered driver side window could be seen in front of the business.

Part of Kentucky 52 was shut down about an hour after the shooting as a helicopter flew the victim out.

Troopers say the victim, identified as Dustin Estes, 31 of Richmond, was taken to UK Hospital with critical injuries.

After a search, troopers say that the alleged shooter was located by state police and Estill County deputies.

KSP identified the suspect as Steven D. McDowell, 35, of Irvine.

Police placed McDowell behind bars at Three Forks Regional Jail. he faces a first degree assault charge.
