ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The number of confirmed cases of pertussis - more commonly known as whooping cough - has more than doubled in Estill County in less than a week.
The Estill County Health Department says there are now 25 confimred cases, compared to 10 cases on Feb 1.
Health officials say 15 of the cases are at West Irvine Intermediate. There are two cases at Estill County High, three at South Irvine Pre-K Center, two at Estill Springs Elementary, and three non-school related cases.
Pertussis is an airborne illness and can easily be transmitted to others. The health department is urging parents whose children are sick to stay at home.
