Man charged with Pikeville officer's murder

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky State Police say they have captured a man connected to the murder of Pikeville Police Officer Scotty Hamilton.

In a news conference, KSP announced they've charged John Russell Hall, 55, of Hurricane Road with the officer's murder.

Troopers say they have captured 55-year-old John Russell Hall in the Stony Brook community of Pike County near the Floyd County line. He was also wanted for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Hall was arrested without incident at 11 a.m. Thursday.

John Hall has a lengthy criminal history in Pike County.

Officer Hamilton was shot and killed Tuesday night. He was a 12-year veteran of the department.

Kentucky State Police say Officer Hamilton was assisting troopers with an investigation in the Hurricane Creek area when he was shot.

Kentucky State Police initially reported one person was in custody. However, they later said the suspected shooter has not been captured. Police say they arrested four people on unrelated charges at the scene of the shooting.
