Police: North Carolina teen arrested after attacking 15-year-old Lawrenceburg girl with knife

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. (WKYT) - An 18-year-old from North Carolina is in jail after police say he attacked a 15-year-old he was having a sexual relationship with with a knife.

Lawrenceburg police say 18-year-old Ryan Smith attacked the 15-year-old girl because he caught her looking at her ex-boyfriend's Facebook page.

Police were called to a home on Djeddah Drive last Wednesday after the girl ran to another home for help.

According to Smith's arrest citation, he held the door shut to keep her from leaving and choke slammed her by the neck into a door.

She told police Smith then attacked her with a steak knife, cutting her arms until she was able to escape.

Police say the two met through social media. They say Smith came to Kentucky from North Carolina to begin a relationship with the girl.

Smith is now in the Shelby County Detention Center being held on a $10,000 cash bond. He's facing charges of first-degree unlawful imprisonment and second-degree assault. Lawrenceburg Police Chief Chris Atkins says he could also face a second-degree sexual abuse charge due to the age difference between the two.

Smith's first court appearance is scheduled for Thursday morning at 10:30.
