WHITLEY CITY, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky State Police is investigating a deadly crash in McCreary County. The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at U.S. 27 and KY 90.
State Police investigate a deadly crash at U.S. 27 and Kentucky 90 on Wednesday, October 11, 2017.
State Police say a 2004 Toyota Corolla driven by Samantha Morgan, 21, turned from KY 90 onto U.S. 27 in front of a 2002 Dodge Neon. The crash killed the driver of the Neon, Ronald Jones. State Police say Jones, 48, was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene.
Jones was from Pine Knot. WKYT has learned he was married and had two teenage children. He worked for the power plant in Burnside. The McCreary County Coroner tells WKYT relatives learned about the crash on social media and met him at the scene.
“I think social media plays a big role in releasing information before it is supposed to be released in some instances," said coroner Tim Corder.
After the crash, State Police say a 2002 Mercury Sable driven by Jamie Lyons hit Morgan's Corolla. Morgan was taken by ambulance to UK Hospital in Lexington for her injuries. Lyons was not hurt.
U.S. 27 was closed in both directions at the crash scene for several hours while police investigated the crash. It reopened just before 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
