LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A busy Lexington road was shut down for hours Tuesday after a car and truck collided, resulting in a 21-year-old girl being rushed to the hospital.
The crash happened near Burkewood Drive. Police closed the roadway from Star Shoot Parkway to Fortune Drive at around 11:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. They reopened the stretch of roadway around 2:00 p.m.
It appeared a truck and car hit almost head-on. The fire department brought out its Jaws of Life apparatus to rescue the 21-year-old. When she was removed she was rushed to the hospital along with a police escort.
Major John Walters with the Lexington Fire Department says the half hour rescue was tough because of the complexity of the crash.
"The car was mangled really bad so it took a little bit longer than usual; but in this circumstance the guys did a heck of a job."
Authorities say there were two people in the truck at the time of the crash. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Although rain is not the determined blame for the crash, officials say slowing down on rainy days can keep incidents like the one Tuesday from happening again.
"Always got to slow down and watch what's going on when it's raining," said Walters.
