PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Pulaski County Sheriff's deputy received minor injuries when a car hit his cruiser.
The crash happened shortly after midnight on Sunday on Murphy Avenue.
Deputy Seath Whiles was out on routine patrol in the Ferguson community. The sheriff's office says as Deputy Whiles was traveling north on Murphy Avenue, a 2004 BMW passenger car heading south crossed the center line, striking the police cruiser.
A deputy who was following behind Deputy Whiles witnessed the crash. He helped the driver of the BMW get out of his car and then arrested him.
28-year-old Rudivel Rodriguez-Gomez faces charges of no operator's license, failure of non-owner operator to maintain required insurance, no registration receipt, and failure to wear a seatbelt. Police also charged him with careless driving, communication device violation, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs (aggravating circumstances), wanton endangerment (1st degree-police officer), and leaving the scene of an accident-failure to render aid or assistance.
Officers took Gomez to the Pulaski County Detention Center. Police also obtained a search warrant for blood samples to be drawn from the suspect.
Medical staff at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital treated and released Deputy Whiles.
