Sheriff: Laurel Co. man nearly runs over owner in fireworks tent theft

The Bait Bucket is basically a mom and pop store...where every dollar is a little bit of the lifeblood of the business on Ky. 312 near Corbin.

And every theft...even the small ones....can be a major headache.

"To see someone like that to come steal what we are working so hard for," says Emma Fields, the owner of The Bait Bucket.

That someone police say is Daniel Bennett, 33, who is accused of stealing hundreds of dollars worth of fireworks.

"Customers that drove past the store. They saw him go up under the tent. They saw him go up under the tent at least three times," said Fields.

And the last time police say was about three Wednesday morning. And when Fields showed up to stop him?

"I grabbed hold of his car, he forcefully got away from me," she said.

Police say Bennett literally tried to run her down.

And that's why they say Bennett is charged with first degree robbery. And when brought him back to the Sheriff's office, police say his behavior led to even more charges.

"He went ballistic on us here, got confrontational, tried to assault, kick one of our deputies, damaged one of our walls, our bench," said Gilbert Acciardo with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.

The investigation is ongoing but Bennett is accused of pulling put up to tent and taking arm loads of fireworks on multiple occasions.

"I just want to thank our customers and neighbors, because without them our business would not be as good as it is," said Fields.

Customers and neighbors that likely prevented the crime from being any worse and may have put Bennett in jail.
