GREENUP CO. (WKYT) - Police shot and killed two people following a chase that ended in Greenup County.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Michael Murriell said the agency's Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

According to investigators, law enforcement in Ohio contacted Greenup County 911 on Thursday night and advised them of an attempt to locate Kiser L. Sturgell, 27 of Ohio, and Ashley Jenkins, 23 of Ohio. Ohio authorities said Sturgell had active arrest warrants and that he had stolen a maroon Buick passenger car. Police noted that both subjects were armed and possibly in the Flatwoods community.

Officers in Greenup County spotted the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop it. The driver kept going, leading officers on a pursuit through several roadways before coming to an end in the area of KY-693 and KY-207. As officers from the Flatwoods Police Department, Bellefonte Police Department, and Russell Police Department approached the vehicle, they say people inside present a threat. At that point, officers fired shots into the car.

Both Sturgell and Jenkins sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The Greenup County Coroner pronounced both dead at the scene.

While processing the scene, police said they removed a rifle from Sturgell's possession. Police in Ohio say Sturgell carjacked someone at gunpoint earlier this week.
