POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Powell County grand jury has indicted a woman on a charge of murder related to the April shooting death of her boyfriend.

Kentucky State Police arrested Melissa N. Roberts, age 33, of Stanton. Police say Roberts shot Steven Strange back on April 20th after he came into her home and confronted her.

According to court records, at the time of the shooting, Melissa Roberts had an emergency protective order out against Steven strange.

Roberts made a 911 call on the night of the shooting.

Roberts: "I just shot him and he's laying in the floor. He come in my house."

Dispatcher: "OK, what is your name?"

Roberts: "Melissa Roberts. I think he's dead. "

Police say Strange died in the home. He was shot in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun.

During the 911 call, the dispatcher can be heard telling Roberts to put down the gun and go outside before ambulance arrived.

Dispatcher: "What'd you do with the gun?"

Roberts: I still have it in my hand. "

Dispatcher: "OK, well lay it down, OK. OK?

Did you lay it down.

Hey, Melissa, did you lay the gun down?"

Roberts: Yeah."

Dispatcher: "OK, can you get outside?"

Just try to stay calm. OK. You hear me?"

Roberts: "I'm panicking. I can't stay calm. I just killed the man I love. ""

Police did not charge her at the time of the shooting. They instead decided to present the case to a grand jury because Roberts said the shooting was self-defense.

On Tuesday, from jail, Roberts said Stevens was often abusive towards her.

"I didn't tell him, no, I didn't defy him because I knew what would happen," Roberts said.

"What would happen?," WKYT News Reporter Monique Blair asked.

"I would get hurt," Roberts said.

Roberts said she never meant to kill Stevens. She said she wanted him to stop abusing her.

"I didn't mean to. I didn't want him to die, I just wanted him to stop," Roberts said.

Steven Strange's sister, Shannon Rogers says she does not harbor hateful feelings towards Melissa Roberts, but she said she does want to see justice served.

"I know that they had a very difficult relationship but I knew Steven loved her very much and as far as I know she loved him too," Rogers said.

At the time of the shooting, friends told WKYT the two had dated for about two years.

Kentucky State Police have not released the details regarding the murder charge against Roberts.

Roberts will be in court Wednesday at 10:00a.m.
