Former UK player, high school coaching legend Allen Feldhaus, Sr. dies

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Allen Feldhaus, Sr., the patriarch of a Kentucky basketball family, has died. Feldhaus was 77.

Before leading Mason Co. High School to basketball royalty, Feldhaus played at Kentucky under Adolph Rupp from 1960-1962. The Burlington, Ky. native also played baseball at UK.

Feldhaus was twice named the Louisville-Courier Journal High School Coach of the Year (1982, 1986). In addition to coaching at Mason Co., Feldhaus also coached at Russell Co. and Green Co., and won 455 games during his career.

But it was at Mason Co. where Feldhaus made a name for himself in coaching. He led the Royals to their first state tournament appearance in 1981. Mason Co. made three more trips to the Sweet 16 under Feldhaus.

Three of his sons played for Feldhaus at Mason Co. – Allen Jr., was a standout guard on the Royals’ team that lost to Simon Kenton in the 1981 state finals; Willie was a starting forward on his dad’s team that entered the ’82 Sweet 16 undefeated, before losing to Todd May and Virgie; and Deron, who played in the 1985 and 1987 state tournaments before becoming a 1,000-point scorer at UK.
