Lafayette, UK great Billy Ray Lickert dies at age 78

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) Billy Ray Lickert, who was the 1957 Mr. Basketball winner and an All-American at Kentucky, died Wednesday at the age of 78.

Lickert led the way for Lafayette to win the 1957 KHSAA Sweet Sixteen championship beating Louisville Eastern 55-52 at Freedom Hall.

Lickert scored more than 1,600 points for the Generals, a mark which stood until 2013 when Jackson Davis surpassed him.

While at UK, Lickert was an All-SEC performer in each of his three years scoring 1,076 points and was named a Scholastic Coach Magazine All-American in 1957.

Lickert was selected in the fifth round of the 1961 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Lickert was inducted into the UK Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
