BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University junior Nick Mayo was voted the Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week, while freshman Dedric Boyd was tabbed the OVC Co-Freshman of the Week on Monday.
The honors come on the heels of EKU’s come-from-behind 73-72 win at Rice in the Colonels’ season opener on Friday night.
Mayo went for his sixth-career double-double against the Owls, scoring 25 points and pulling down a career-high 12 rebounds. The 6-9 forward from Oakland, Maine shot better than 50 percent from the field (8-of-15) and 90 percent from the free throw stripe (9-of-10). He also added a team-best three assists, one steal and one block. Mayo scored six points in the final three minutes of play to keep the Colonels within striking distance, setting the stage for Boyd’s last-second heroics.
In his first collegiate game, Boyd poured in 20 points and grabbed six boards. With EKU trailing 72-70, he drew a foul while shooting behind the three-point line and calmly sank all three free throws with five seconds left to lift the Colonels to victory. The 6-4 guard from Brownsville, Tennessee also contributed a steal and an assist, and he knocked down a team-best three three-pointers in the win.
EKU has now had the OVC Freshman of the Week in 17 of the last 33 regular season weeks, dating back to the 2015-16 season.
Boyd shares this week’s honor with Belmont guard Nick Hopkins.
Mayo, Boyd and the Colonels play at Ole Miss tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will air live on SEC Network+ and the WatchESPN app.
