MOREHEAD, Ky. -- D1Baseball.com, one of the top authorities on the college game, has picked the Morehead State baseball program to win the Ohio Valley Conference title this spring and represent the league in the NCAA Tournament.
The website also selected junior outfielder Niko Hulsizer as its OVC Preseason Player of the Year. Hulsizer was tabbed as the second-best prospect for the 2018 MLB Draft, while senior righthander David Calderon is listed as the league's eighth-best prospect. Infielder Bryce Hensor was listed among the OVC's impact freshmen.
The following is an excerpt from D1Baseball.com's assessment of the Eagles in 2018.
"The good news for the Eagles is that they return four star hitters in junior left fielder Niko Hulsizer, senior second baseman Braxton Morris, junior shortstop Reid Leonard and senior third baseman Eli Boggess. Hulsizer led the league in homers (27), RBIs (82) and total bases (193). Boggess, who can run and is tough to strike out, ranked second in the nation in batting average (.425). Morris, who hit .364, has quite a tool box, including speed, toughness and elite defense. Leonard hit .328 despite injuries and is finally healthy. There are no freshmen scheduled to start for the Eagles - this is a win-now bunch - and that includes the rotation, where senior right-hander David Calderon has moved from the bullpen to the weekend rotation. He is a pro prospect who sits 92-95 mph with his fastball, while also showing much better command during fall workouts. Meanwhile, also keep an eye on righty Jake Ziegelmeyer, who sits 81-90 and up to 91 with his fastball, along with good command of a three-pitch mix."
Morehead State opens the 2018 campaign on Feb. 16 against UMass Lowell in the Shipyard Classic in South Carolina.
