Old Fashioned Gingerbread Thursday, June 16, 2011


5 TBSP shortening
½ cup sugar
1 egg, well beaten
½ cup molasses
1 ¾ cups flour
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
½ cup buttermilk


Cream the shortening and add the sugar. Beat in the egg. Add molasses and mix well. Mix together the flour and the spices. Mix the soda into the buttermilk. Add the fry ingredients and the milk alternately to the creamed mixture. Pour into a greased and floured 8 inch square pan and bake in a preheated 350 deg oven about 45 minutes. Cut into squares and serve warm.
