Good Question: Why are school buses not equipped with air conditioners?

School is back in session here in Fayette County and that means thousands of students will spend part of their day riding the bus.

Most of us are use to air conditioning in our cars, but that's not the case for many buses.

Good Question: Why are school buses not equipped with air conditioners?

There are 200 buses that hit the road in Fayette County everyday, a majority of those without air conditioning.

When its hot like this, drivers are opening windows, and ventilating the buses for a somewhat cooler ride for students.

"We're always concerned about the welfare of the children, we watch it very closely," said John Kiser, the Director of Transportation in Fayette County.

As Transportation Director, its John Kiser's job to keep students safe.

We asked why no ac?

"Well cost is always a factor in everything one does,"said Kiser.

He says many newer models do have it, but he says retro-fitting older buses would be too expensive for the few months when the weather is hot.

"We have right now 12 buses that are air conditioned in that fashion. The newer ones in the past we've had three or four of the very small ones," said Kiser.

Those buses are for special needs students.

While some might think its too hot for students, Kiser assures he wouldn't put students in danger.

"We know that in some cases there are going to be some kids that are a little more sensitive to the physical surroundings than others," said Kiser.

For that precautions have been taken.

You may not know that eating and drinking on a school is not allowed in Kentucky.

That means no bottled water, in Fayette County school officials make sure bus monitors have large bottles of water in case of an emergency.

"Its probably beneficial, helpful and reassuring for parents to know that we do have that second adult on the bus and that person's sole job is to take care of the passengers on the bus," said Kiser.

Kiser says his department has done studies looking at cost and time students spend on the bus to determine the effectiveness of having air conditioned buses.
