Good Question: To rent or buy? Which could save my college student the most money?

Thousands of college students will hit the books for another semester at the University of Kentucky this week.

Many of them will be wondering where they will find the money to shell out for books this year.

Good Question: To rent or buy? Which could save my college student the most money?

Andrew Grace is a first time college text book shopper.

The UK freshman is looking to save anywhere he can and that has him thinking of taking advantage of a new offer at the University of Kentucky bookstore-renting not buying books.

"I may rent a few books if I can find some that are available to me to rent because it will still save me money. That's money back in my pocket that I don't have to spend," said Grace.

National averages show that incoming freshman will shell out between $650 and $675 for books and supplies.

Last year the UK Bookstore was part of a pilot program offering the rental of textbooks.

The program saved students across the country $6 million.

Sally Wiatrowski, the Director of Retail Operations at the UK Bookstore says it was a hit with students here.

"If it's a rental eligible title they'll save over 55%, so its a pretty substantial savings," says Wiatrowski.

For students the process is very easy.

"They can decide which way they would like to go. Do they want to rent, do they want to buy a new copy or buy a used?"

Students can even purchase the book after the course if they think it will be helpful later on.

For parents footing the bill, renting to save is quite the bargain.

"For one of his books, one that he's not going to use again. So if 55% savings, that's what we were told that makes a lot of sense," says Karen Schenk, a UK parent.
