Lisa Gross with the Kentucky Department of Education says there is no
requirement for schools in Kentucky to have security guards on school
Some schools do have guards, but it depends on the school's budget and
if it allows for the hiring of someone to be there around the clock.
Some schools have what are called resource officers, they are often
times area police officers who are paid through a state grant.
Most school resource officers are only there while school is in session,
so in the case of the shooting at Leestown Middle School, Gross says the
officer would not have been there as students were gone for the summer.
Gross does say all schools lock their doors and that you cannot get in
without being buzzed in by the front office.
