The Suffoletta Family Aquatic Center in Georgetown has been shut down so
it could be brought into compliance with new federal rules. The
Georgetown News Graphic reported the aquatic center was scheduled to
reopen Saturday, July 25.
It was closed because of the Virginia Graeme Baker Act, which is aimed
at reducing the risk of suction and entrapment in public pools. The law
is named after a girl who died when drain suction in a hot tub pulled
her underwater. This federal law was put in place in 2007.
