I have noticed a lot fewer fireflies this summer. What is the reason for this?

The UK Department of Entomology says there isn't a really good answer to the question, only that insect populations vary among years and locations. The department chair says it may just be a poor year for fireflies in this area. In fact, he says he was in central Illinois recently and they were abundant in number and quite impressive there. It must just be a down year for us here in the bluegrass when it comes to fireflies.
