I see purple boxes hanging in trees around the city. What are they for?

One place you will see some of those purple boxes is at the arboretum here in Lexington. The boxes are actually sticky traps for the invasive pest the emerald ash borer. The insects attack ash trees and can destroy them.

The emerald ash borer has already killed millions of trees in other states including in nearby Ohio. The traps were put up in May and will be there until August. The traps are actually detection devices to try and learn how to slow the spread of the infestation.

Right now infestations have been found in seven Kentucky counties, 20 others have quarantines in place. For more information on these destructive insects you can go to emeraldashborer.info or to report an infestation call the emerald ash borer hotline at 1-866-322-4512.
