Good Question...Do Lexingtonians do a good job of recycling?

Recycling is big business in Fayette County, last year the city was able to sell $2 million worth of recycled material.

Now, with a new plan in place to make it easier for people to recycle, that could mean more revenue from going green.

Good Question...Do Lexingtonians do a good job of recycling?

The sound of a busy conveyor belt at the recycling center, it's the sound of a greener Lexington thanks to folks recycling.

It appears most people are recycling on a regular basis.

"Right now we are about 60 percent and we're hoping obviously to go as high as possible with that effort." said Steve Freese, the Director of Waste Management for LFUCG.

An audit last year done by the city found that 75 percent of materials put into Herbies could be recycled.

The city has decided easier is better, no more sorting.

"Starting June 1st, Lexington residents will no longer have to separate their glass from their other recyclables." said Major Jim Newberry.

But the city wants to remind you not everything can be recycled.

"One of the common problems we have are plastic bags, we do not accept empty plastic grocery bags here, we encourage people to take those back to their local grocery stores." said Freese.

Things that can accepted:

Milk jugs

Beverage containers

Water bottles

Laundry detergent bottles

Paper, cardboard and aluminum cans

From helping the environment to helping the economy, we do both when we send materials to the recycling center.

"Recycling is a major generator of jobs here in Central Kentucky as well as the region." said Freese.

A $2 million Energy Efficiency and Conservation grant will will allow the city to place 40 new recycling containers in ten of the city's largest parks.
