Good Question: Will the massive oil spill affect travel plans to the Gulf Coast?

Many Kentuckians choose the Gulf Coast region of Florida and Alabama as their summer travel destination sites, but with 200,000 gallons of oil spilling into the ocean per day that may have them re-thinking where they go.

Good Question: Will the massive oil spill affect travel plans to the Gulf Coast?

The phones are busy this time of year at AAA of the Bluegrass.

"We're coming into sort of the summer travel season and things are getting busy." said Christopher Oakford of AAA.

For people planning to pack their bags and head to the Gulf Coast, scenes oil slicked water make it less than ideal.

All that oil in the Gulf of Mexico has some folks calling AAA asking a lot of questions.

"The advice that we are giving is, its still really too early to tell how severe the damage will be and in what areas will negatively be impacted," said Oakford.

Oakford says rather than making travel plans, many are changing them.

"What we are seeing, people are taking the decision for themselves and calling us up and switching their sort of vacation plans to the Atlantic coast."

Each summer thousands of central Kentuckians make the trek to areas like Destin and Mobile for summer vacation, but now Oakford says many of those people are opting for places like Myrtle Beach and the Outer Banks, far from the reaches of an oil slick.

"I don't think people should panic, I would just wait it out and see and look at state reports, federal reports from officials before making your decision but watch those careful to see what damage is."

Travel agents say if buying travel insurance, check on natural disasters, they are not always covered as part of a cancellation.
