Chances are this weekend you and your family sat down to a backyard barbecue, in fact the Fourth of July holiday is the top grilling holiday!
Good Question: Why do we love grilling?
For many there is nothing like the the aroma of burgers cooking on the grill wafting through the air.
Grilling is a summer pastime, in fact according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association 80% of us have a grill.
"Its just so casual and relaxing," said Sharon Thompson.
Thompson is the food writer for the Lexington Herald Leader, she says she thinks grilling is so popular simply because its so easy and inexpensive.
"You can put burgers and hot dogs on the grill and even though they are inexpensive, they just taste so much better when they are cooked outdoors," said Thompson.
Grilling became all the rage in the 1950s, that's when Weber started selling its first grill and ever since folks have been grilling up anything they can get their hands on.
Today some 85 million Americans own a grill.
The 2009 Barbecue Industry Report says charcoal has taken a back seat in popularity.
Nearly 70 percent of us have a gas grill, while 37 percent cook on a charcoal grill and two percent resort to using an electric grill.
Even though that same reports says men do most of the grilling Sharon Thompson says that doesn't have to be the case.
" I think there are a lot of people who say they are master grillers, because its kind of macho or cool, but everyone can do a good job," said Thompson.
The Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association also says 58% of us grill year round.
