Good Question: Which is better water or sports drinks?

Our bodies are 60 % water, that means when the temperatures soar like in recent days we can quickly become depleted without even knowing it.

Making sure to stay hydrated is key in avoiding heat related illnesses.

When its this hot anything outside can be a chore, and that includes keeping your body hydrated.

"Dehydration is one of the major contributing factors to heat related illness," Dr. Ryan Stanton, the Medical Director of Emergency Services at UK.

We all know a good ole glass of H2O is refreshing, but is it the best option?

Take a stroll down the sports drink aisle and there a lot of options all clamoring to quench your thirst.

Some boast extra electrolytes, others vitamins even antioxidants, but are they better than water?

"What we prefer is water, some electrolyte solutions such as Gatorade, Powerade, some type of drink like that."

What Dr. Stanton says you do want to avoid is drinks that have high amounts of sugar.

Sugar, he says actually helps to dehydrate you faster.

It used to be we were told to drink four eight ounce glasses of water a day.

Dr. Stanton says that differs for every person based on size and what they are doing in the heat.

The best advice, he says just listen to your body.

"This is the important thing, your body will tell you when you need to drink more."

Dr. Stanton says in Lexington so far they are only seeing a handful of heat related cases.
