Good Question: How much will the average family spend on back to school supplies?

For many students across the area the days of summer vacation are quickly winding down.

For parents that means back to school shopping, but in a tough economy it can be expensive.

Good Question: How much will the average family spend on back to school supplies?

When displays of crayons and backpacks start going up in stores, it's a sure sign that summer vacation is winding down.

Students know the first day of class is right around the corner and parents know its an indication they'll be shelling out some serious cash for school supplies.

The lists of paper, pencils and who knows what else can be long.

According to a National Retail Federation survey seven in 10 parents say they'll shop at discount stores.

To try and save on that back to school list, 44% of parents will buy only store brand or generic products.

That same survey from the National Retail Federation says that back to school spending is expected to be up this year.

When it comes to buying supplies, clothes even electronics the average American family will spend just over $600, that's up from 2009 when families only spent $548.

All those parents in search of filling their child's teacher's list will help pump $21 billion into the economy, and that's a lot of pencils for school!
