Good Question: Why is the YMCA going to just the "Y" in its name and logo?

For 160 years YMCA's have been providing a sense of community in towns all across the US, but after all those years a change is coming to a place many know so well.

Good Question: Why is the YMCA going to just the "Y" in its name and logo?

It's a place that in Central Kentucky serves 55,000 people a year, from swim lessons to a place to work out.

Its the YMCA, and now its sprucing up its image and dropping a few letters.

'The name change has come about as a way to simplify how we talk about ourselves and our program in order to hopefully help educate the general public about what the YMCA stands for," Jim Kelsey, the Communications Director for the YMCA of Central Kentucky.

The new logo will be rolled out in the next few weeks.

Kelsey, says the non profit organization will still officially be the YMCA, loosing the M-C-A is only an image and brand change.

"We're embracing the name that most people already associate and call us by is the "Y"," said Kelsey.

The YMCA hopes with a more simplified message it will help people understand what the volunteer driven organization is all about, serving the community.

"We don't turn anyone away due to inability to pay, in 2009 we awarded over $1.1 million for financial assistance to help those who otherwise could not afford our program or membership," said Kelsey.

It's a subtle change with a big message for a place that strives to build a better community one "Y" at at time.

In Lexington the new logo will be visible in the next few weeks, first on the website.
