Good Question: Nancy-Berea: Pharmacies are already advertising that flu shots are available, when is the best time to get one?

Each year the Centers for Disease Control says some 200,000 people are hospitalized because of the flu.

It will soon be flu season before we know it.

"When the weather gets cool again, we will see the spread. We're expecting the same strain as last year," said Dr. Patricia Quinlisk.

A typical flu season can begin as early as October and last until May.

Peak season is usually in January or February.

Right now you may be seeing signs at your local drug store or doctor's office to get your vaccination now.

Shipments of the vaccine started arriving this month and health officials and the CDC say go ahead and roll up your sleeve.

"So the vaccine we have plenty of it. You should start getting vaccinated as soon as possible to be protected," said Dr. Quinlisk.

As for what the vaccine will protect against this year, it typically covers what researchers think will be the three most common strains.

"There's no reason to wait. The vaccine will protect you for one year until next year at this time," said Dr. Quinlisk.

Those most at risk, babies and the elderly.
