The human heart is one large muscle beating 72 times per minute and nearly 2.5 billion times in an average lifespan.
Good Question: How can weight training build a stronger heart in women?
When you work out your motivation may be to squeeze into your skinny jeans or look good in that little black dress, but it's the muscle you don't see that might matter the most.
"The heart muscle, the tissue the strength of the contractions and how efficiently your heart works is extremely important and the only way to manage that is by exercising regularly," said Dr. Tom Spring, an exercise physiologist.
With simple exercises, like squat shoulder press combo, women can build muscle, but by combining it with weight training they get a heart pumping workout.
"You exercise with weights, do squats and bicep curls. We've actually shown that their heart becomes more efficient, resting heart rate comes down their capacity to do work cardiovascularly goes up because we've made the system work better," said Dr. Spring.
Getting the system to work better is what will halt heart disease, and that's the goal.
The American Heart Association has gathered women to be a part of the My Lifecheck Makeover Gang.
The women are hand picked to undergo heart healthy training, that's diet, stress management and exercise.
"We know that if you weight train for a certain period of time, 12 weeks or whatever that your heart works less hard to do the same thing it did before you trained, " said Dr. Spring.
February is Go Red month dedicated to educating women about cardiovascular disease.
