Good Question: How did the Red Cross use my money in Haiti?

A year ago an earthquake plunged one of the world's poorest countries into chaos.

Haiti was rocked by an earthquake that killed nearly a quarter million people.

Shortly after that disaster, Kentuckians pulled together for the Hoops for Haiti telethon here at WKYT and opened their wallets to give.

Good Question: How did the Red Cross use my money in Haiti?

To see the country one year later you may not think much has been done in Haiti, but efforts to rebuild the impoverished country are ongoing daily.

"We are spending right now about $660,000 a day on relief efforts, now things are not going as quickly as any of us would like," said Winn Stephens with the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Hundreds of thousands are still living in terrible conditions, some 800,000 earthquake survivors are still homeless and there is enough rubble to fill 5000 Olympic swimming pools.

The American Red Cross has been active in the last year in Haiti.

Right now they are helping 30,000 people displaced get into more permanent housing.

Nationally the Red Cross has raised $479 million for relief.

A million and a half of that money came from right here in Kentucky with last year's Hoops for Haiti telethon with Coach Cal.

" Lexington and this area was the 16th largest contributor nationally to the Haiti earthquake relief, we outpaced cities like Houston and Orange County, California," said Stephens.

Your donations last year made some of the most basic necessities available right away for the people of Haiti.

"We spent most of the money probably that we raised in Lexington because it was so early on getting food, clothing, shelter, medical supplies, those kinds of things down there," said Stephens.

Stephens says 91.5% of the donations went to direct aid in a most critical time.

The Hoops for Haiti Telethon was historic, the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross says 7,000 donors contributed to that effort.
