Good Question: How much sunscreen should I be putting on?

Fun in the summer sun can mean danger for your skin.

Dermatologist Brent Moody says we do not apply enough sunscreen to our bodies.

"Right here are two ounces of sunscreen, each of these jars is one ounce, this is how much a teenager or adult needs to apply to thoroughly cover their body," said Dr. Brent Moody.

What do you look for when you buy sunscreen?

"I tell my patients to look for is an SPF of 30 or higher," said Dr. Moody.

The other thing to look for are two words on the bottle, broad spectrum.

Under new FDA guidelines it means the product has been tested to protect your from both UVA and UVB rays.

Once you buy the right sunscreen, Dr. Moody says the rest is up to you, like when you put it on.

"I recommend and most of the manufacturers recommend about 30 minutes ahead of time," said Dr. Moody.

He says don't wait until you get to the pool or beach, he says its also important to re-apply sunscreen.

"I think you need to reapply every two hours to have maximum coverage and that number will decrease with heavy sweating or swimming," said Dr. Moody.

A few areas of the body that get neglected include the ears and the lips.

Dr. Moody says look for an SPF 30 lip balm, don't use a lip gloss.

If its cloudy out, Dr. Moody says you should still wear sunscreen.
