Good Question: Is there any truth to the rumor that your cell phone number will be made public?

Most all of us have one a cell phone and most all of us hate getting telemarketing calls.

What if your phone was free game for those sales calls?

A recent an email may lead you to believe that could happen.

Good Question: Is there any truth to the rumor that your cell phone number will be made public?

Chances are you may have seen an email like this on pop up in your inbox, its a warning that your cell phone number will go public this month for telemarketers to hunt you down.

"This is not true at all its actually an urban legend that has been making the rounds for years now," said Heather Clary with the Better Business Bureau of Central Kentucky.

In fact, Clary says this email has been around since 2004.

The rumor tries to scare cell phone users into thinking their numbers will be sold.

"It all started because cell phone companies were working on possibly putting together a directory of cell phone numbers alone to which by the way you had to opt into," said Clary.

That never happened, but what did happen is the start of this nasty rumor.

The email says you will be bombarded with sales calls unless you register your number on the Do Not Call List.

That is something Clary says you should do anyway.

"You can put your cell phones on the Do Not Call List, there's no deadline for it any number that's been signed up on the Do Not Call List is still on it unless you have changed the number for some reason."

The email leads you to believe there is a deadline for registering, that's not true either.

The Federal Trade Commission got rid of the five year expiration date several years ago.

As for this particular email, its one you can happily click delete to!

Clary also says most telemarketing calls that come to your phone are illegal according to government standards.
