Jason Perlow loves salads, but a few years ago one nearly put him in the hospital.

The lettuce had been recalled for E.Coli contamination and he became violently ill.

"Absolutely miserable, I would never wish this on my worst enemy," Jason Perlow.

The U-S government says one out six people gets sick from E.Coli and other food borne illnesses every year.

So the U-S-D-A is launching an entertaining new ad campaign, reminding Americans how to prepare food safely .

Food poisoning is more common during grilling season.

With the Fourth of July approaching the government is urging Americans to follow four steps.

Clean surfaces, utensils and your hands
Separate raw meats from other food
Cook meat to the right temperature
Chill food properly

Its also important to remember the proper temperature certain meats should be cooked to while grilling.

Ground beef 160 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 seconds
Poultry and stuffed meats 165 degrees F for 15 seconds
Pork products 150 degrees F for 15 seconds
Other products 140 degrees F for 15 seconds
Reheating leftovers 165 degrees F for 15 seconds

Food borne illness sends about 180,000 Americans to the hospital every year.

And it can be deadly, a recent E.Coli outbreak in Europe killed almost 50 people.

The government hopes the funny ads will catch people's attention.

"We want people to look at these ads and perhaps turn up their televisions," said Elisabeth Hagen the Undersecretary of Food Safety with the USDA.

Perlow got the message, he takes care to make sure his food is safe.

The government estimates that food borne illness kills nearly 3000 Americans every year.
