Good Question: Why are people not allowed to swim in city fountains?

The Lexington city pools have been packed this week because of the heat, but people are also finding relief in some areas the city doesn't want you to go.

Good Question: Why are people not allowed to swim in city fountains?

On a steamy day the fountains in downtown Lexington look like an inviting way to cool off.

"Its unfortunate when its hot like this that we have to tell folks we don't want them to do that," said Jerry Hancock, the Director of Parks and Recreation in Lexington.

Hancock says city fountains like the one in Thoroughbred Park are off limits.

There are signs that warn visitors to stay out, but it still doesn't keep people away from them.

"We are really trying to protect them, it was designed to be looked at, maybe sit on the edge to put your feet in, but its not meant to be walked on or to be used as a swimming pool," said Hancock.

The fountains are treated with chlorine, but since they weren't designed for people they don't have to comply with Kentucky Swimming Pool Codes.

When people use them to take a dip it can create a health hazard with water born illnesses.

" You are looking at a number of things from E Coli, Salmonella to Cryptosporidium," said Jason Ferry with the Lexington Fayette County Health Department.

All things that can ruin your summer.

"Well it can make you really sick, we're talking about using the bathroom quite a bit and maybe vomiting or something like that, you don't want that to happen," said Ferry.

So. instead of taking a dip in a fountain, the city says you should make your splash in one of the city owned pools to cool off.

Parks and Recreation manages the fountains and they have the right to tell people to get out of them and if someone doesn't comply they can even involve police.
