Kentucky's bookmobile program is recognized nationally for its excellence in providing service. the Bookmobile program was started by the Friends of Kentucky Libraries with help from many organizations, and individuals in the 50's.

Good Question-Nicole, Whitesburg: Why does the Bookmobile program still exist?

There is a purple van that is unmistakable driving through Lexington.

Its mission, delivering books to readers across the city.

At Friendship Towers a retirement community folks eagerly await its arrival, one of those 97 year old Ethel McBrayer.

"I read a lot and I've got a list right there," said McBrayer.

Its much like the Bookmobile program you may remember as a child only in Lexington a little different.

"We call our service a Book Van instead of a Bookmobile because we make institutional stops," said Kelli Dean the Outreach Services Manager for the Lexington Public Library.

Each month, the Lexington Public Library's purple Book Van makes more than 70 deliveries to 40 different locations, including daycares, nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

"A lot of times people have special requests at places like we are today, we maintain a standing collection of books anywhere from 100 to 500 books at certain places around town," said Dean.

Whether its the traditional Bookmobile where you go inside and look for books or a van delivering them to people. its service that Kelly Dean says is vital.

The van delivers books to those who might not be able to get to the library.

it's a service that Ethel McBrayer is thankful for.

"Honey its wonderful and you know I have a bum knee so getting to the library would be a handicap for me and we look forward to them coming all the time," said McBrayer.

And it's a service the folks at the Lexington Public Library are happy to be a part of, one book at a time.

As for the Bookmobile program in Kentucky its operates in over a hundred counties.
